It Is Simple

When the Covid-19 shutdown occurred, some quarantined at home with nothing to do. Others, like me, became busy coping with the changes in their world. I never feared for my physical health because I believe in God’s sovereignty and that my days have been assigned before I was born (Psalm 139:16). I also believe that God is in control of everything, even Covid-19. However, the mass hysteria of people who bought all the toilet paper they could find was upsetting to me, and the work of conforming to all this was very stressful and tiring. But I find that there is a simple solution – keeping life simple. I read this quote by Richard Foster in his book Freedom of Simplicity:

The joyful paradox in all this is that while simplicity is complex, it is also simple…There are not many things we have to keep in mind – in fact, only one: to be attentive to the voice of the true Shepherd. There are not many decisions we have to make – in fact, only one: to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. There are not many tasks we have to do – in fact, only one: to obey Him in all things.

This brought to mind my favorite Bible verse: Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! (Psalm 46:10). I am in a place of peace because I know that God is sovereign, in control, and faithful. It is simple.
