Space for Stillness

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Psalm 46:10-11 ESV

My life has changed during the past several weeks. The hustle and bustle that normally defines me has slowly faded. My nonstop motion has given room for stillness and rest. The to-do list that typically consumed much of my thoughts has gotten smaller, leaving more God-space. I am a doer and that has both a good and a bad side to it. I believe that God gifted me with a heart to serve others, but that heart cannot trump spending time with Him.

I think of Jesus and the way He escaped the crowds to spend time with His Father, to be still, to be quiet, and to know His Father’s heart. If Jesus, being God, had to be intentional about those times, how much more do we need to? God has created stillness in my life, and in that stillness, He waits for me to spend time with Him, to learn from Him, to fall more in love with Him. This is a blessed season of rest and stillness and God is waiting for us here.
