Serve Our City Projects

April 6-June 23

We’re hosting a huge Serve Our City Fair on March 23/24 where you’ll meet many of our local ministry partners and learn how they serve people in our community. You’ll also have a chance to sign up for one of 30 service projects with these organizations between April 6 and June 23. Following is a brief summary of some of the projects in-person sign-up begins on March 23/24, and online sign-up opens on Monday, March 25. Be sure to join us at the fair to sign up for the project of your choice!

Adults and Children Experiencing Poverty & Homelessness

OrganizationNeighborhood Ministries, urban missional center for youth and families
Project: Drive the 18-passenger van and pick up students from 4:30-6:30pm and return them home between 8:30-9pm. Volunteers can also help during Kid’s Program from 6:30-8:30pm.
Volunteers Needed: 10 (adults over 21 with a valid driver’s license)
Location: Central Phoenix

Organization: Hope Women’s Center, resource center serving women in crisis
Project: Help with administrative tasks, sort donations, prepare sack lunches for families, help in the Children’s Program, and prepare community outreach materials
Volunteers Needed: 8 (women, all ages)
Location: Central Phoenix

Organization: Phoenix Rescue Mission, Men’s Transforming Lives Center, homeless shelter and residential recovery center
Project: Come serve dinner to the men at the center. You may be helping with last minute food prep, plating the meals, and serving it to the clients as they are seated.
Volunteers Needed: 12 (only groups, married couples and men. Volunteers must be 14 and over, under 18 requires adult supervision.)
Location: West Phoenix

Organization: Harvest Compassion Center, food and clothing center
Project: Help families shop for groceries, clothing and hygiene items
Volunteers Needed: 10 per date (adults and children 5-12 must have one guardian per child)
Location: Scottsdale/North Phoenix

Organization: Sleep in Heavenly Peace, beds for kids in need
Project: Help build, assemble and stain wood bunk beds for kids
Volunteers Needed: 50 (adults and children 12 and older accompanied with guardian)
Location: Scottsdale

Organization: Phoenix Rescue Mission, Women and Children’s Changing Lives Center, residential recovery center

Organization: Titus House, transitional low-cost housing for men and discipleship
Project: Paint the exterior of a single story very small home
Volunteers Needed: 12 (adults and children 16 and older)
Location: Phoenix

Organization: Matthew 25 Project, serve dinner at shelters for men, women or families
Project: Help serve hot meals, distribute Bibles or reading glasses to individuals and families. Meet for a brief orientation at SBC before going to one of five shelters.
Volunteers Needed: 20 (adults and children 16 and older)
Location: Scottsdale, Central Phoenix

Organization: Phoenix Rescue Mission, Men’s Transforming Lives Center, Community Market
Project: The monthly Community Market needs shopping assistants, line managers, set up and tear down before and after the event and general assistants to help us serve the families that come to the center needing food and clothing.
Volunteers Needed: 12 (adults, volunteers must be 14 and older, under 18 requires adult supervision)
Location: West Phoenix

Organization: Phoenix Rescue Mission, Hope for Hunger Community Food Bank
Project: Jobs include front lobby client check in, running carts with food to client vehicles, sorting, boxing, and bagging food, food bank indoor clean up, or traffic control
Volunteers Needed: 12 (Adults, volunteers must be 14 and older, under 18 requires adult supervision)
Location: Glendale

OrganizationOperation Christmas Child, sends shoeboxes filled with gifts for kids worldwide
Project: Sort hundreds of donated toys and items to prepare for filling shoeboxes in November
Volunteers Needed: 15 (adults and children 10 and older, with adult supervision)
Location: Scottsdale

Foster Care and Adoption Partners  

Organization: Christian Family Care, foster care and adoption agency
Project: Help sort, organize and tag donations for the Family Attic Thrift Store
Volunteers Needed: 8 (adults and children 14 and older)
Location: North Phoenix

Organization: Firm Foundation Youth Homes, Christian home for AZ foster care youth
Project: Help plant a garden in the backyard of the group home
Volunteers Needed: 10-15 (adults and children 6 and older)
Location: Scottsdale

Organization: Christian Family Care, foster care and adoption agency
Project: Create scrapbooks for foster children who often do not have a sense of family history because they have moved frequently or their parents did not take pictures of them that would have documented their lives
Volunteers Needed: 20 (adults and children 5 & older, some scrapbooking experience is helpful)
Location: Central Phoenix

OrganizationArizona Helping Hands, assist foster families with basic needs
Project: Help decorate and personalize birthday bags for our Birthday Dreams for Foster Kids program
Volunteers Needed: 15 (adults and children 10 and older)
Location: North Phoenix

Organization: CarePortal, online platform that connects needs of kids in crisis to local church
Ongoing Project: Receive an email request for a need, choose if you can fulfill it, and deliver the item
Volunteers Needed: Unlimited, email is required

Organization: Royal Family Kids Camp, one-week camp for foster children ages 7-11
Project: Serve as a Camp Counselor or Camp Buddies (partner w/ Camp Counselors) for one week
Volunteers Needed: 30 (adults only. Volunteer training on May 18 or June 8 at La Casa de Cristo Church. Applications must be submitted by April 15.)
Location: Payson, AZ

Pro-Life Partners 

Organization: Choices Pregnancy Center, medical professionals who provide free pregnancy consultations and services
Project: April 13 Walk for Life/5k Run, annual event for awareness and support
Runners and Walkers Needed: unlimited

Organization: Choices Pregnancy Center, medical professionals who provide free pregnancy consultations and services
Project: Walk for Life Event volunteers needed to inflate balloons, set up tables, chairs and signage, greet, set up and distribute food and snacks and register walkers. Serve in the Kids Zone and help with face painting and bubbles. Serve as a walk guide along the walk.
Volunteers Needed: 30 volunteers at ASU Tempe and 30 volunteers at ASU West
Locations: ASU Tempe, ASU West, Desert Springs Community Church in Goodyear

Organization: Living Hope Women’s Center, pregnancy and resource center, transitional housing
Saturday Project: Volunteer teams meet at SBC and pick up furniture from pre-arranged locations and load the items into a trailer at North Bible Church. Volunteers also remain at SBC to accept donations and load the trailer.
Volunteers Needed: 10 (adults and teens who can move large items)
Location: Scottsdale Bible Church

Organization: Living Hope Women’s Center, pregnancy and resource center, transitional housing
Sunday Project: Help the team accept clothes, household and furniture donations and load them into a U-Haul in the SBC parking lot
Volunteers Needed: 10 (adults and teens who can move large items)

Organization: Living Hope Women’s Center, pregnancy and resource center, transitional housing
Project: Event assistance at Living Hope’s annual fundraising banquet. Help guests check in, serve and clear dinner, and set up and tear down of tables and chairs.
Volunteers Needed: 10 (Adults and children 16 and older)

Immigrants and Refugee Partners

Organization: Hope Response, relief and trauma assistance team
Project: Spend time with African and Middle Eastern refugee families and children through games, Bible stories, crafts and conversation. We will share lunch and spend time in an outside area at the refugee apartment complex.
Volunteers Needed: 12-18 (adults and children 3 and older with adult supervision)
Location: Phoenix

Organization: Creighton Foundation, Burmese Refugees, apartment complex-based tutoring and mentoring
Project: Family Carnival volunteers will help set up and help kids with face painting and carnival and field games. Volunteers will serve food, grill hot dogs and run the popcorn & snow cones machines.
Volunteers Needed: 20-24 (family friendly event, children are welcome with adult supervision)

Native American Partners 

OrganizationCHIEF Ministries, disciple and equip Christian Native American leaders
Project: Help prepare and serve food, wait tables and clean up during the 2-day women’s retreat
Date/time: Friday, April 5, 9am-12pm – 2 volunteers or 3pm-7pm – 2 volunteers (dinner provided)
Date/time: Saturday, April 6, 7:30am-1:30pm – 2 volunteers or 9am-1:30pm – 2 volunteers

OrganizationCHIEF Ministries, disciple and equip Christian Native American leaders
Project: Help CHIEF staff prepare the quarterly mailer and stuff, seal and label envelopes
Volunteers Needed: 12 (adults and children 12 and older)
Location: North Phoenix

Recovery and Prison Ministry Partners 

Organization: Along Side Ministries, one-year residential homes for previously incarcerated Christians
Project: Indoor – Clean women’s homes, kitchen, common area. Cleaning supplies provided.
Project: Outdoor – Paint block wall, clean up yards, remove shrubs, empty a casita
Volunteers Needed: 20 indoor (adults and children 8 and older with adult supervision)
Volunteers Needed: 20 outdoor (adults and children 8 and older with adult supervision)

Organization: Teen Challenge of Arizona, residential addiction recovery facilities for men, women and children
Project: Paint, organize and clean the kitchen at the Home of Hope for Women and Children
Volunteers Needed: 7-10 (adults and children 13 and older)
Location: Casa Grande, AZ

School Partnerships

OrganizationHealthy Packs Program, weekend meal program for kids in Title 1 Scottsdale schools
Project: Pack weekend backpack meals
Volunteers Needed: 7 each date (adults and children 9 and older)

Medical Care

Organization: Neighborhood Christian Clinic, Medical facility with medical & dental healthcare professionals who provide free Christian healthcare
Ongoing project: Calling all healthcare professionals, doctors, pharmacists, nurses, hygienists, medical and dental assistants, chiropractors and interpreters (Spanish) to help provide whole person healthcare in the inner city
Volunteers Needed: Unlimited (Adults)
