Boldly Together in Hard Times

When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God…” –Acts 4:23–24

Peter and John had just been questioned by the Jewish High Court for their teaching about Jesus, and a miracle they performed in His name. The council was made up of men who were responsible for Jesus’ trial and crucifixion (Annas and Caiaphas). Upon finding no way to punish them, they threatened the two and released them. When the new believers found the apostles and heard what had happened, the first thing they did was pray for God’s will to be done, and for boldness to preach the Word of God even in difficult times.

It is a beautiful thing that Peter and John’s first instinct after being released was to seek out their friends. Their friends didn’t plan an escape route or run to the store for supplies. They boldly prayed for the ability to preach the Gospel even with the threat of persecution. The Gospel was their communal focus. Some of you may be riding out this season alone. But it is so important to be together in times of trial. This week, if you aren’t in community, take a step to get into one. Join a small group or call a friend. Whatever you do, boldly ask the Lord to help you share the Gospel.
