There is incredible, soul reviving, life giving HOPE waiting for us. Please realize that HOPE is one of the most powerful human and divine motivators we have! Because you see, hope can cause one to be lifted out of the here and now and catch a glimpse of what can and will be! And the resurrection of Jesus is all about hope! In fact, in every way imaginable, in every area of our life, it IS our hope. The hope that God gives in Jesus’ resurrection is what every thirsty person is looking for – even if they don’t know it yet!

In this section of Luke 15, we are confronted with a clarion call from Jesus to experience the rescue efforts by volitionally identifying with one of two primary characters in this story—while at the same time avoiding becoming like the third character. As we shall see, Jesus will challenge us to either identify with a “lost son” and make the decision to “come home” to God; OR to identify with the “waiting father” and make the decision to be about gracefully welcoming lost son’s home. All the while, we must guard our hearts and minds from choosing to become like an “older brother” who is angry and judgmental about the younger son coming home and thus also distant from the father.

The woman in this story—who loses a coin and makes a frantic search for it—most likely represents the Church—us—who are called to not only join God’s heart and mind when it comes to how we view the world around us, but actually become a part of the rescue efforts to find and brings home lost people to Christ. When we actually become part of the search and rescue mission that God is on and take the risk to love, journey and share with those around us—then we also get to share in God’s joy in recovering the lost!

The Bible is filled with stories of very ordinary and human people who are used powerfully by God to carry out His purposes here on planet earth! People like: Moses, who couldn’t speak well, to be His mouth-piece to Pharaoh.; Gideon, who had trust problems, to lead the country in battle.; Elijah, who got massively depressed, to convict the leadership of sin.; David, who acted on lust in his heart, to be the greatest King in the Old Testament.; Hosea, who had a rocky marriage, to be a prophet.; Peter, who was impetuous and couldn’t keep a promise, to be a “pillar” in the Church.; Paul, who hated Christians and hadn’t made friends of them at all, to be the most powerful and persuasive missionary leader the first century Church ever knew. ;Mary and Joseph—who lived in an ordinary town and were everyday people—to participate in His redemptive plan for humankind.

Once you understand that God chooses to use ordinary people and that His redemptive Kingdom is still just as much alive as it was 2000 years ago, you can’t help but realize that God might want to use you as well!

There is a very important overriding theme of this passage—it’s one of the primary things going on here that affects many of us today in our walk with God. It is that even very godly men can struggle with doubt. The story is about the priest Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth. The passage says they “were both righteous in the sight of God,” and then it says they “walked blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.” Not that they were perfect, but they would absolutely fit the definition of the most upright, honest, godly person you know! Even so, when an angel appeared to Zacharias to tell him his prayers had been answered, he doubted. It should comfort us that if Zacharias doubted, then doubt may come to us as well. God, however, is bent on restoring those who doubt—back to faith in Him.
