Mairowa Integrity School
The Mairowa Integrity School (MIS) opened in January 2008 as the first English speaking, private primary school in Mairowa. Mairowa is a city of 6,000 predominantly Masai people in northern Tanzania located very near the border with Kenya. A student’s education at MIS begins with two years of preschool (K1) and kindergarten (K2) to provide a strong transition from Swahili to English. There are thirty children in each grade level at MIS and a new grade is added each January. Currently the school has one class per grade through second grade (P2).
The nearly 120 children in K1, K2, P1 and P2 at MIS are taught by a staff of five teachers and a headmaster (principal). There has been an amazing transformation in our students’ English ability and this is very visible in the Masai community. Another well known characteristic of KIS is that the children are individually loved and nurtured by their teachers, something that is greatly appreciated by their parents. Classes begin each day with praise, prayer, and devotions which center on a story from the scriptures.
Because MIS has no power available, a media center and the One-Laptop-per-Child (OLPC) computer program we are using at the Kondoa Integrity School (KIS) has not yet been implemented. In 2011 the first class of students will take the P4 national exam, as do all P4 students in Tanzania. By January 2014 the school pipeline will be full with approximately 540 students through seventh grade (P7) and the P7 students will take the second national exam.
All of our students at MIS are sponsored by families from Scottsdale Bible. This means that every year thirty new sponsor families are needed for the thirty new students entering K1. Over time we expect local resources to continually fund a larger percentage of the MIS operating expenses. If you would like to sponsor a child contact Tanzania@scottsdalebible.com to learn more about the program and receive a child sponsorship packet.
