Tour de New River 2008: Transformation through Education

Strap on your helmet and zip up your jersey because it’s time to get ready for the Tour de New River 2008!  The event will take place on November 1st, 2008.

Tour de New River is an annual bike tour event in Arizona that rallies together cyclists from a variety of different backgrounds and experiences in order to bring an end to the cycle of poverty in Tanzania, Africa.

The theme for the bike ride is “Transformation through Education.”  By getting involved and riding your bike, you will make a lasting impression on the families and children of two impoverished communities of Tanzania, Kondoa and Mairowa.  All entry fees and additional donations given or raised by individual bike riders will go to help these communities by:

Improving the quality of education for hundreds of children

Increasing the level of food nutrition for families

Bringing awareness to health and hygiene issues

Liberating women from the bonds of tribal practices

Now is your chance to ride and participate in your favorite hobby, but more importantly to impact lives in Africa through your partnership with us!  We hope to see you on the route!

History about the Ride:

Mairowa and Kondoa, unknown Tanzanian communities to most, are in dire need of renewed hope!  Mairowa, an extremely poor Massai village, and Kondoa, a village of nearly 95% Muslims, have passionate pastors with incredible vision to see God impact their own communities.  In 2005, Scottsdale Bible Church came alongside these pastors and a local Tanzanian organization to help provide hope and sustainable development to the remote locations.

As a launch into the development efforts and through the support raised in past bike tours and outreach events, a well was dug and a water tank constructed in Mairowa to provide clean water just yards away for the families for the very first time.  In the past, women would have had to walk 10 miles to the nearest water source, so the water tank helped meet a substantial need in the community. Schools were constructed in Kondoa and over 400 children have been sponsored to date within the two communities, along with ongoing training in leadership, personal hygiene, and HIV/Aids.

The hope for this year’s Bike event is to raise enough funds to construct two more school buildings in Kondoa and one in Mairowa.  For two school buildings the cost is ~$40,000.  This will allow 60 more students to enroll for the 2009 school year.  There are currently four classrooms with 30 students each in Kondoa.  Mairowa is set to open its doors to students as classrooms are constructed.  Donations and funds raised will help the growing community expand their educational abilities and will also help fund teachers’ salaries for the next year in Mairowa.

There is a lot of need, but through your partnership, we are confident that Transformation through Education will occur!

FAQs:

  1. How long is the route?  There is a short route option of 40 miles and a long route option of 72 miles.  When registering for this event, you will have the opportunity to pick which route you prefer to participate in.  (Click here for link to routes)

  1. Where does the ride start from and end up at?  The ride starts from Pinnacle Peak Patio in Scottsdale, Arizona.  (10426 E Jomax Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85262).  It will loop around New River and end back up at Pinnacle Peak Patio.

  1. Is there an entry fee cost?  Yes, the cost of the entry fee is $80.  This cost along with any donations raised by individual riders will offsite the event costs and go to support the education for children in Africa.

  1. Will there be jerseys to purchase?  Yes. Any rider that raises $650 or more will receive a free event jersey.  If donations are not raised by the individual rider, then a jersey can be purchased separately.  (Jersey example and costs are currently unavailable, but will be posted when completed.)

  1. What time will the ride finish up?  This depends on how experienced you are as a rider, what route you choose, and how fast you decide to ride!  In past years, riders have come in at all different times, but hang around and stay for the free lunch provided by Pinnacle Peak Patio to riders, hikers, volunteers, and other participants.

  1. Are there prizes or awards given?  Yes.  For those riders that raise $3,000 worth of donations, their name will enter the grand prize drawing.  For every $500 more raised after the $3,000 minimum, the rider’s name will go into the drawing again.  (For example:  If a rider raises $4,500, then their name will go in once for meeting the $3,000 quota, and 3 more times for the additional 3 $500 amounts raised).  The winner of the grand prize drawing can choose between either a money voucher towards a new bike or a certificate for a free trip to Tanzania, Africa on one of Scottsdale Bible Church’s short-term teams that are sent out periodically throughout the year.
