Q:
While I enthusiastically study the bible on my own, I am not to the point
that I can gain the insight that I get when you present it. Do I need
to study Hebrew and Greek or attend seminary. I want to be able to understand
the deep meaning of the passage and be able to interpret it in light of
other scripture. How do I get to that point?
A: Thanks for asking and I'm encouraged by your desire to become
a scholar of the Word. There are a number of excellent tools that can
help you gain a deeper insight into the Bible such as commentaries, word
studies, and a good study Bible. Having a knowledge of Greek and Hebrew
is not a prerequisite for developing a deep understanding of the Bible,
but it is a necessary ingredient for becoming a true scholar of Scripture.
That is why nearly all of the masters of divinity programs in evangelical
seminaries require a knowledge of Greek and Hebrew. We are blessed to
have Phoenix Seminary in our own backyard and if possible, I would encourage
you to take advantage of it. A working knowledge of the Biblical languages
provides insight into the Word that, on occasion, isnt availalbe in English.
