Q:
I am interested in your thoughts about the Holman Christian Standard Bible.
The publisher boasts a literal, word-for-word translation from the original
languages. In seeking a translation that has not been influenced by our
culture or "political correctness" would you recommend this
new translation?
A: There
is no such thing as a translation that has not been influenced by its
culture. To use language is to appropriate cultural assumptions. The most
literal translation remains the New American Standard Version. The English
Standard Version is almost as literal, but is easier to read. I would
personally recommend the latter.
