Ask A Question

Q: Can anyone perform a baptism? For instance, can my husband and I baptize eachother (we are both believers) or must we have this performed at the church in order for it to be legitimate?

A: Baptism is one of the two ordinances of the church (Communion is the other) that were given by Jesus to be done by the church (Mt. 28:19, 20). Because of the priesthood of believers any Christian can perform a baptism. Thus, a private baptism that is done in a community of believers is acceptable and legitimate. However, one of the admirable aspects about baptism is that it is a public testimony to the world that you have been transformed and are not ashamed to publicly identify with the body of Christ and thus serves as a great witness of your new life in Christ.
