Q:
What is the origin and religious significance of baptisim?
A: The earliest occurrence of baptism in the New Testament is with
John the Baptist (Mk. 1:9-11; Mt. 3:1-17). However, we practice it today
because Jesus, in His final instructions to His disciples commissioned
us to (Mt. 28:19) and so we demonstrate our love for Christ by our obedience
to His commands (Jn. 14:15). In Acts, faith and repentance are the prerequisites
for baptism (Acts 2:38; 8:13), and according to Paul it represents the
believers union with Christ through a symbolic participation in the death,
burial, and resurrection of Jesus (Rom. 6:4) and is a public celebration
of their incorporation into the Body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:13)
