Q: I have heard sermons in the past on the subject of Astrology, and am a bit reluctant to get involved but lack specific scripture to support my feeling that we as Christians are obligated to rely on Him only and suspect delving into astrology even as a bystander might be wrong for me.
A: Astrology has been practiced throughout history, and was very common in the Ancient Near East. There are some fairly clear Scriptural references that speak strongly against the practice of worshiping heavenly bodies or even looking to the heavens for guidance (Deut. 4:19; 17:2-5; 2 Kings 17:16-17; 21:5-6; 23:4, 11; Jer. 8:1-3; 10:2; 19:13; Ezek. 8:16; Zeph. 1:4-6; Acts 7:42). Isa. 44:24-25 even indicates that God is in complete control and that signs and omens cannot be trusted because God can make them fail. As well, when Scripture speaks of divination, or interpreting the signs or omens (Lev. 19:26; Deut. 18:9-14; Jer. 27:9), it would be fair to assume that astrology is included in the list, although the practices varied greatly. Believers are not to be guided by stars or signs, but rather by the Holy Spirit and obedience to the Word of God. You would do best to politely refuse to be involved in such practices and pray for this man's salvation.
