Ask A Question

Q: I don’t recall hearing sick people directed (I've seen them occasionally invited, like last Sunday) to call upon the elders, nor do I recall SBC elders anointing people with oil. As a lay reader of the Word, this directive in James 5:14-16 would seem as clear and adamant as others that we do follow I know that elders does not necessarily mean the Elder Board. What else am I not understanding about being directed and anointed with oil?

A: You might be surprised to know that our elders have indeed anointed the sick with oil and prayed over them on several occasions. However, such a situation is to be initiated by the afflicted person. If you'll look a little closer at James 5:14 the directive is for the sick person to "call the elders". Thus, it is a reactive ministry on behalf of the elders.
