History

The way God created Scottsdale Bible Church is not unlike the five loaves and two fish He used to feed thousands. In 1962, He took five families and three individuals and multiplied them into thousands of enthusiastic people for Christ. There was no evangelical church in Scottsdale. A group of 13 gathered the first Sunday in January.

After meeting in a home school, women’s club and the Masonic Lodge, five acres were purchased in 1963 and within two years, the congregation settled into a new facility. God blessed this work with numerical growth and with boundless faith 20 acres of land were purchased in 1974 off Miller and Shea. Services began there in 1979.

From its inception, Scottsdale Bible Church was missions-minded and a solid foundation for personal spiritual maturity and growth was established through the study of God’s Word. Children’s programs, musical teams, women’s ministry and adult enrichment classes were all launched in its beginning days.

Transformational biblical teaching was rigorous, both in the pulpit and throughout all other programs. Pastoral leadership included Jim Borror, Sherrill Babb and Don Sunukjian. In February 1981, after 18 months without a senior pastor, God led Darryl DelHousaye to Scottsdale Bible. Pastor Darryl came to a vibrant church. Excellent administrative leadership and the teaching ministry of men from all over the country had kept the church healthy and growing—increasing by over 35 percent during those interim months.

In the ensuing years, Scottsdale Bible Church leapt forward. The staff enlarged, programs and building space were added and refurbished, several churches were planted and a second campus was launched—all with the underlying purpose of developing devoted followers of Jesus.

Scottsdale Bible Church has been blessed. Thousands of lives have been changed. Individuals and families have been rescued. People are using their gifts to expand God’s kingdom. And we continue to grow.

With that blessing comes accountability. God is asking us to take new risks, begin new adventures and continue to take seriously our purpose of developing devoted followers of Jesus—who glorify God and expand His kingdom. It compels us to build healthy, growing congregations. It enlarges our hearts to reach Arizona for Christ. And it takes us to the forgotten places of the world with the gospel.

Since Scottsdale Bible Church was founded, we have committed ourselves to obeying God. Some tasks were simple, many were challenging and some seemed impossible. We are grateful. We are grateful for God’s hand of blessing on us and for the resulting growth of this ministry. We are grateful for His guidance to navigate through the challenges. And most of all, we are grateful to have been entrusted with the gospel of Jesus Christ, with its healing power and promise of eternal life.
